Thursday soulmate stitching: The Staple Dress (+ wieder mal RUMS)

Do you remember the sew fantastic blogs interview with Sophie from C'est la vie? And how I said that she seems to be my sewing and blogging soulmate? The last weeks I've been in contact with her almost daily. It all started with me asking her to translate the instructions for one garment out of this French sewing book for me. I won't tell you now which one, but you can be assured: It's a big project and I really hope to make someone happy with it. I sent Sophie a little present (some fabric) to say thank you for the time that she put into the translation. We then started to talk and realized that again we were both sewing the same thing at the same time: The Staple Dress by April Rhodes. While we wrote message after message I even more started to feel connected to Sophie. Again and again would she write exactly what I was going to say the next moment.

We decided to celebrate our new friendship and new wardrobe Staples (hahaha) by posting about them at the same day. It was so much fun to have someone to talk to who was just sewing the same things, who just like me was quite afraid of the shirring and then said: "Uh, why was I afraid. I'll shir everything now!"

I chose a super light chambray for the dress, inspired by this and this one, plus the fact that denim or chambray dresses are everywhere at the moment and plus I totally wanted to use chambray for the first time. I really love it. I'm normally more drawn to prints than to solids, but realized that what I reach for when I take something out of my closet is often solids or stripes. I'm sure that I'll get a lot of use out of this dress. It's so airy and summer-y, yet with cardigan, tights and boots will easily work in the fall.

Regarding the pattern: I won't say too much about it as it seems as if almost everybody has already sewn it. It really is a Staple Dress and there are more to come, I'm sure. I got my pattern during the Perfect Pattern Parcel sale (yet have to sew the other patterns). My measurements for bust, waist and hip fell in 3 different sizes (as mostly) and I just drew a line gradually changing from top to bottom. I really get the hang of this and enjoy more and more that I can sew clothes that fit. In RTW dresses I always have to decide whether I want to be uncomfortable below my waist or wear something huge above it - aargh...

The sewing itself went really smooth. It's quite an easy sew. There are french seams at the shoulders and sides, giving a beautiful inside finish. As I mentioned above I was afraid of the shirring before, but it turned out that shirring is the easiest thing ever.

These pics were taken at a farm house museum close to where we live. It's a super beautiful place and we go there at least twice a year. Come back tomorrow if you want to get to know more about it as I will then show more pics from the houses, flowers, animals etc.

And now, go and check out Sophie's beautiful Staple Dress. Classy as always ;)

Last, but certainly not least: This is linked to the super fun German link party RUMS where every thursday all things for us women are gathered.
